Known as “The Sunshine State”, Florida is heavily focused on the tourist trade. The beaches are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Florida, along with some of the world’s best known theme parks, including Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. However some of the state’s best secrets are in secluded locations away from tourist areas and well worth seeing. Regardless of preference Florida has something to offer for any kind of traveler.

Crystal clear waters, idyllic beaches and a prevailing sense of calm make St. Martin’s a delight. With its iconic red and white Daymark, erected in 1683 by Thomas Ekins, it is the first island you spot as you cross from the mainland.

The island is just two miles long, yet it has some of the finest beaches in the British Isles, if not the world. Additionally, the spectacular flowers, plant life, rare birds and sensational sea views along the heathery cliff path walks all add to the thrill of St. Martin’s unmistakable beauty. Exploring the islets of Nornour, Ganilly and Menawethan from St. Martin’s also allows you to spot colonies of seals not so far off shore.

Behind these beautiful scenes, there lies an enterprising and diverse community. There’s a flower farm and vineyard – both open to visitors, a fabulous dive school offering snorkelling with seals, and a wonderful gallery showcasing local artists.

Airport: All scheduled travel to the islands is operated by Isles of Scilly Travel. There are four departure points from the mainland: Exeter, Newquay and Lands End if you fly by Skybus, and Penzance if you take the boat – the Scillonian III passenger ferry.

Schliersee is a natural lake in Upper Bavaria in the Bavarian Alps. It is located next to the small town of Schliersee in the Miesbach district. The Schliersee, on the edge of the Bavarian Alps, is in every way as attractive as its better-known neighbour, the Tegernsee. The beauty and variety of the area can best be seen from the surrounding summits, the Kirchbichl or the Schliersbergalm. The little lake island of Wörth is accessible to the public and has belonged to the state of Bavaria since 1971.

Among the points of interest in Schliersee, a climatic health resort, is the St Sixtus church with a Holy Trinity group by Erasmus Grasser and wall and ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann.

SPAIN

Torremolinos has evolved as an attractive and appealing resort noted for its clean sandy beaches, wide choice of hotels and restaurants and unparalleled variety of entertainment, activities and nightlife available. Torremolinos is located 7km west of Málaga airport and was the first Costa del Sol resort to be developed back in the early sixties when it was little more than a sleepy village, still today the town reflects its heritage with several of the original fresh fish bars located right in the shopping centre, incongruously flanked by exclusive boutiques and gift shops. In general, however, the wave of tourists who descended on the town in the fifties and sixties changed the face of Torremolinos for ever.

At the height of summer, the resort has a great appeal for the younger set, with a reputation for its hectic nightlife. Out of season, however, it takes on a different character. Now practically a suburb of Málaga, the atmosphere is much more Spanish, especially at weekends, with an air of friendliness and welcome.

CANARY ISLANDS

Gran Canaria is the third-largest island in the Canaries’ archipelago, but accounts for almost half the population. It lives up to its cliché as a continent in miniature, with a dramatic variation of terrain, ranging from the green and leafy north to the mountainous interior and desert south. To glean a sense of this impenetrable quality, head to the centre, where the sheer drama of the mountains more resembles the Tibetan highlands than a relatively small island.

Contrasting with these unspoiled peaks and valleys is a rugged coastline interspersed with white sandy beaches and, more famously a garish tiara of purpose-built holiday resorts.

Beyond the sands, though, Gran Canaria can keep the adrenalin pumping, with scope for hiking, cycling and watersports, while culture-vultures can be similarly satiated, particularly in the historic cosmopolitan capital of Las Palmas.

VIETNAM

Situated on the north bank near the base of the Thu Bon River, in central Quang Nam, is the ancient town of Hoi An. Once a major port, it boasts the grand architecture and charming riverside setting that befits its heritage, but the 21st-century problems of traffic and pollution are almost entirely absent. For most of the twentieth century, the city’s allure and importance dwindled until an abrupt rise in fortune in the 1990s, when a tourism boom transformed the local economy. Today Hoi An is once again a cosmopolitan melting pot, one of the nation’s most wealthy towns, a culinary mecca and one of Vietnam’s most important tourism centres. This resurgence of fortunes has preserved the face of the Old Town and its incredible legacy of tottering Japanese merchant houses, Chinese temples and ancient tea warehouses. However lounge bars, boutique hotels, travel agents and a surplus of tailor shops are very much a part of the scene here.
